Let’s Break It Down: Government Shutdown

The words “government shutdown” sound so catastrophic and scary, almost like a Purge-type situation. While   a government shutdown might not indicate a period of lawlessness and anarchy, there’s no denying that it has other negative implications. A shutdown occurs when Congress fails to pass a budget resolution for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins on Oct. 1. The Jan. 19 shutdown was caused by partisan disagreements regarding both the budget and whether the resolution would be tied to solutions for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Past shutdowns have been t...

Staff Picks: Lady Bird

I’ve never thought about what Sacramento was like in 2002. I went once, and felt no need to return. “Lady Bird” made me wonder wistfully about the kind of life I might lead if I were to live in 2002 Sacramento. The film opens with Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson, (Saoirse Ronan) and her mother Marion (Laurie Metcalf) listening to “The Grapes of Wrath” audiobook in the car, sobbing,  as they finish  their college road trip. This is the part where, if you’re like me, you start laughing because, why on earth would a mother and daughter be crying as an old man reads them &ldqu...

Can everyone please calm down about #Oprah2020?

On Jan. 7, Oprah Winfrey accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her “outstanding contribution to the world of entertainment” at the Golden Globes with a speech that left the country in a frenzy. She conveyed her sense of honor at being  the first black woman to be given the award, and touched on her appreciation for the press, but her words mostly addressed the #MeToo movement, notably urging audiences everywhere to fight for “the time when nobody ever has to say ‘me too’ again.” It was a beautiful and compelling speech, one that said all the right things, and was eloquently de...

Day in the Life: Julian Levy

The day Julian Levy (12) learned to ride a bike came not long after he took his first steps. “My dad put me on a bike when I was one or two,” Levy said. “He cycled and raced, too.” Fast forward 16 years and Levy is a competitive cyclist with a spot on the VeloSport Junior Development team, the largest junior and U23 road cycling racing program in America.  Levy competes in events for both road and velodrome cycling, two vastly different types of racing.  “Velodrome races are more fast-paced than huge, long races,” Levy said. “At most, ...

Student detained after found on campus with weapon

A TPHS senior was detained by the San Diego Police Department on Nov. 16 for having a BB gun in his possession on campus. The student, who is a minor, was in Catherine Mintz’s third-period Economics class, although the class had a substitute teacher that day, according to Sora Oyaizu (12). Principal Rob Coppo said administrators and police  responded to the incident quickly and efficiently, making it unnecessary to place the school on lockdown. “We identified the student quickly and knew where he was, and we were able to remove [the possibility of a lockdown] immediately,” C...

Pro: Standing for the National Anthem

Colin Kaepernick was not the first professional athlete to refuse to stand for the national anthem. Before him came, among others, Brooklyn Dodgers player Jackie Robinson and Oakland Raiders player Marshawn Lynch, who began his silent protest while on the Seattle Seahawks. After Kaepernick, a slew of players from a variety of sports ranging from high-schoolers to professionals kneeled or linked arms in protest. In response to the widespread protest, at a rally in Alabama, President Donald Trump urged NFL owners to fire any player who does not stand because he “disrespects our flag.” NFL owners should allow kneeling an...

Portugal. The Man “Woodstock”

If the cover art of Portugal. The Man’s eighth studio album, “Woodstock,” was intended to illustrate the quality of the songs in the album, it would be doing a pretty successful job. By the way, the cover is of a car engulfed in flames. I should mention that this is my first experience listening to the band and I didn’t even know they existed until about a week before I was assigned to review the album. Portugal. The Man’s music can be placed into the genres of psychedelic rock or pop, alternative or indie rock and many others, which made it hard to decipher. The only correlat...

TPTV halts production but will likely resume in November

“TPTV,” a weekly show put on by the Advanced TV Production class, is likely to  resume in November after the show is “restructured,” according to the new teacher of the class, Derek Brunkhorst. The new program will be different in content, quality and duration, and will likely go by a different, undetermined name. “The main restructure is that a lot of the little sketches that were in [previous episodes of TPTV] aren’t going to be on ‘TPTV;’ it’s really going to be more of the happenings that are going on around school,” Brunkhorst said. ...

The F-Word

Every other Thursday, a group of about eight girls gathers in an otherwise empty classroom to scarf down lunch before starting to use the F-word.  But how much chit-chat can be made on the topic of one single word? “They make judgements about who you are by just this one word alone,” Gabi Gonzalez (12) said. She and Zoe Catz Johnson (12) serve as co-presidents of a TPHS club dedicated to the F-word. They facilitate those bimonthly meetings so that club members can have a place to voice their opinions around like-minded people. No, this is not a forum for etymology enthu...
