Con: Trump’s immigration bill that provides citizenship for DREAMers, tightens border security, cuts legal immigration

State of the Union Addresses are often used to tout a president’s upcoming agenda. While president Donald Trump certainly discussed tax cuts and trade, he also wasted no time unveiling a new, four-pronged immigration plan. Trump is bargaining with Democrats. In exchange for offering protections to DACA DREAMers, Trump is demanding $25 billion for his border wall and other protections, an end to the visa diversity lottery and the end of “chain migration.” What Trump may not realize is that this plan hurts more than it helps, and therefore should not be passed in its current form. By limiting immigration, Trum...

Pro: Trump’s immigration bill that provides citizenship for DREAMers, tightens border security, cuts legal immigration

On September 5, President Donald Trump deliberately ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and left conditions for DREAMers, unauthorized immigrants who came to America as children, in a chaotic state as they may face deportation. Since Trump’s seemingly outrageous decision to end this policy, DACA has been the subject of constant debate and negotiation. His new four-part proposal requested funding for a border wall with Mexico and increased funding for Border Patrol will be provided. He has also proposed banning U.S. citizens from sponsoring their adult children, parents and siblings for green cards and that the ...

Boys soccer lances Knights in 3-1 win

Boys soccer (1-0) defeated the San Marcos High School Knights (0-1) 3-1 in their season-opening match on Nov. 30, with forwards Ted Merrifield (11) and Tyler Weinrich (12) and midfielder Alec Philibbosian (11) all scoring goals. “As a team, I thought we pushed the ball forward, created chances and, in the end, put the ball in the back of the net,” left wing and captain Grayson LeRose (12) said.  Possession was relatively balanced until nine minutes in, when San Marcos got its first chance to score. But defender Blake Munchnick (12) blocked the shot leading to a huge counterattack by the Falc...

Day in the Life: Julian Levy

The day Julian Levy (12) learned to ride a bike came not long after he took his first steps. “My dad put me on a bike when I was one or two,” Levy said. “He cycled and raced, too.” Fast forward 16 years and Levy is a competitive cyclist with a spot on the VeloSport Junior Development team, the largest junior and U23 road cycling racing program in America.  Levy competes in events for both road and velodrome cycling, two vastly different types of racing.  “Velodrome races are more fast-paced than huge, long races,” Levy said. “At most, ...

Con: Standing for the National Anthem

The “Star-Spangled Banner,” has only been the nation’s official anthem since 1931. However, the lyrics date back to 1814 and the anthem was played many times during the 1800s. In August 2016, Colin Kaepernick, an NFL quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, refused to stand for the national anthem. Since then, many NFL athletes have followed in his footsteps by kneeling or locking arms and protesting in silence for the people of color who suffer oppression in the United States as frequent victims of police brutality, among other racist practices. It is respectable that these NFL athletes are shining a light upon...

Jessie’s Bake Shop

When I walked into Jessie’s Bake Shop, the dim lighting and utter lack of customers almost made the bakery feel abandoned.  The lack of variety at Jessie’s seemed to explain the dearth of customers; the shop only had a disappointing 15 to 20 options. The server behind the counter recommended that I try the Apple Turnover ($2.25), Pecan Tart ($1.35), Chocolate Pecan Pie Slice ($2.25) and finally, the Raspberry Scone ($1.35). Despite the lack of variety, I was thoroughly impressed with the prices as the total came out to be only $7.20. The texture of the Apple Turnover, which I trie...

Meek Mill “Wins & Losses”

Robert Rihmeek Williams, better known by his stage name Meek Mill, released his third album “Wins & Losses” this July. When Meek Mill called out Drake for using a ghost writer on Twitter about two years ago, Drake responded with two diss tracks that significantly torpedoed Meek Mill’s popularity; “Wins & Losses” was Meek Mill’s way of redeeming himself as a rapper after this incident. The album contains many references to his past mistakes and humble upbringing. Despite the setbacks Meek Mill has experienced, this album shows he has come back from his slump. The first track, ...
