Girls tennis claims 23rd consecutive CIF title

The Lady Falcons tennis team clinched its 23rd consecutive CIF title Oct. 26 after playing four rounds of matches at Barnes Tennis Center. The competing teams tied with nine matches each, but TPHS won more games: finishing 77-71. This title furthers the Lady Falcons’ reputation as one of the most successful sports teams of the athletic powerhouse that is TPHS. The Lady Falcons bested San Ysidro High School in the first round of the tournament and went on to defeat Poway High School and La Costa Canyon High School as well. In the fourth and final round of the tournament, the girls faced Westview High School, a squad head coach Ch...
SHOT ON GOAL: Goalie Layne Moore (12) attempts to block a shot on goal. The Falcons used the AFC Tournament as a learning experience and will work on developing key skills for the rest of the season.

Water polo loses four out of five games at AFC Tournament

Boys water polo lost four out of five games at the America’s Finest City Tournament on Sept. 21 and 22, a weekend described by coach Rob Tilburg as a "learning experience." "We learned a couple of things defensively and made adjustments that we will implement for the rest of the season," Tilburg said. "We only came out 1-4 this weekend, but in the bigger scheme of things we made some good progress." On the first night of the tournament, the team lost to Los Osos High School 12-9 and beat Los Altos High School 14-8. Five of the six goals in the Los Altos game came on outside shots that were scored by set defender Zach Applegate (1...

Volleyball takes down LCC 25-22, 25-14, 25-22

After being named the number one team in the nation the day before, girls volleyball (4-0) defeated La Costa Canyon (6-4) 25-22, 25-14 and 25-22 on Sept. 21. Setter and co-captain Ryann Chandler (12) said that team members were "prepared for a tough match," and knew they would have to work hard and focus on their own game. Madison Dutra (12), carrying momentum from the Fallbrook game with an .800 hitting average, also posted noteworthy statistics at the game. She dominated the court with four kills, two assists and two aces, which were "rewarding" considering the rivalry between the two teams, according to Dutra. "I definitely ha...

Football falls to Vista 2-0 in a defensive game

Unable to rally their offense, the visiting Falcons (2-2) lost to the Vista High School Panthers (1-2) in their Sept. 21 football game, 2-0. "Vista is a very talented team and [today’s game] was just two good teams going at it," TPHS head coach Scott Ashby said. "We knew it was going to be a very defensive game because games against Vista always are, but it came down to us committing too many mistakes." The Falcons’ first drive fell flat after two unsuccessful halfback runs and a failed quarterback draw. However, their fortunes turned when TPHS defensive back Jackson Gentes (12), picked off Panther quarterback Davin Lemon-Rodrigue...

Day in the Life: Reily Buechler

Eyes glued to the televised volleyball matches of the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Reily Buechler (11) knew she wanted to be a part of Team USA. Buechler’s recent commitment to the University of California at Los Angeles, which has offered her a full-ride scholarship to play volleyball, will help her reach the 2020 Olympics. Buechler committed to the defending NCAA champion, at a school she has long dreamed of attending, at the beginning of the summer. "I committed without telling my parents," Buechler said. "[UCLA] called me and said, ‘If you want to commit, you should probably commit right now,’ so I was like ‘Okay, committed!’" A...

Falcon Tries: Paddle boarding

When I was about five, I went to the community pool with my mom and my little sister and I decided I was going to teach myself how to jump in the pool. Standing at the edge of the water, I surveyed the other swimmers, convincing myself that if they could do it, so could I, and flung myself into the water. I found myself in a similar situation when I first tried stand-up paddle boarding a few weeks ago. Convinced by my sports editors that I did not need to take a lesson, I stood before a rented paddle board on the shore of Mission Bay, not exactly sure how to proceed. After a few moments of hesitation, I pushed the board into the ...

Lady Falcons still undefeated

The Lady Falcons tennis team (12-0) defeated a previously undefeated Westview 10-8 on Sept. 25. While this is the team’s first win against Westview, head coach Chris Numbers considers the victory just "one of many" to come in the following weeks. "We don’t put emphasis on any specific games, but the girls definitely stepped up today," Numbers said. According to Numbers, standout performances from the team’s doubles pairs heavily contributed to the win. In their first year on the squad, Sheyda Khonji (9) and Nicole Beachboard (9) did not expect to sweep all three matches, but their victories as a doubles team helped carry the La...

Field hockey falls to RBV 3-0

Field hockey (8-2) lost 3-0 to Rancho Buena Vista High School on Sept. 25. The RBV offense dominated the game, leaving the TPHS defense exhausted. "We expected a very good and tough team, but we also expected a close game," TPHS head coach Katy Moyneur said. According to forward Alayna Tomlinson (10), RBV, ranked No. 2 in the county, lost a few games to opponents that TPHS believed they were superior to, so the team went into the game with confidence. "We weren’t expecting the same team as last year, but we were expecting the same tactics," Tomlinson said. However, the Lady Longhorns started the game with a strong offense, kee...
